Learn about our projects!

The Center for Healthy Communities is currently committed to two core research projects focusing on healthy vision and healthy hearing among American Indians. In addition we have supported and assisted with data collection and data analysis of a Tribal Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance Survey (BRFSS).

Core projects:

NW Tribal Vision Impairment Prevention Project

NW Tribal Hearing Loss Prevention Project

Other projects sponsored by the Center for Healthy Communities:

Healthy & Empowered Youth (HEY) Project

In partnership with the Northwest Portland Area Indian health Board, Longhouse Media, the HEY Project combines the "Native STAND" curriculum and film-making to address the prevention of high-risk health behaviors among Native youth. Through the curriculum, teens produce their own videos that incorporate American Indian culture and tradition and address topics of health and wellness relevant to native youth. They HEY Project is funded by the Department of Health & Human Services.
